6. Castle Drogo

The youngest castle on this list, Castle Drogo is a striking mansion-castle located on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, built between 1911 and 1930 for businessman Julius Drewe and designed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens.
Drewe commissioned the castle as a modern family home interpretation of a medieval fortress, inspired by his belief in a noble lineage.
The structure is built from locally quarried granite, giving it a rugged look that marries traditional medieval imagery with early 20th-century practicality. Internally, it features oak-panelled rooms, vaulted ceilings, large granite fireplaces and modern amenities of the time such as heating and plumbing, combining grandeur and livability.

The castle stands in a dramatic location overlooking the River Teign gorge.
Although it faced difficulties – particularly its exposed location which caused weathering and waterproofing challenges – it remains notable as often described as the “last castle built in England”.
