10. Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle stands atop an ancient volcanic rock in the heart of Scotland’s capital. Its position on the rugged summit known as Castle Rock provided a naturally strong defensive site long before the current fortress was erected.
The castle’s origins stretch back to at least the 11th century, and over the centuries it has served multiple roles: royal residence, military stronghold, prison, and national symbol.
Many of its buildings were altered or expanded in successive periods, reflecting changing needs and styles—from medieval great halls to artillery-fortified batteries.

Today, Edinburgh Castle welcomes visitors who can explore its historic rooms, museum displays, and sweeping views across the city and beyond. Its commanding skyline silhouette remains one of Scotland’s most recognisable images.
