17. Arundel Castle

Arundel Castle in West Sussex dates back to the late 11th century. It was founded shortly after the Norman Conquest, when Roger de Montgomery received the lands and built the initial fortifications.

Over time the castle transitioned through several powerful families, notably passing into the hands of the Howard family (who hold the title Duke of Norfolk) via marriage in the 16th century.

Throughout its long history, Arundel Castle has been both a fortress and a residence. During the English Civil War it suffered damage as it was besieged and later repaired.

The medieval Norman keep remains one of its oldest surviving parts, complemented by later Gothic-style renovations and Victorian additions.

Today the castle is still the home of the Dukes of Norfolk and operates partly as a visitor attraction. Its interiors feature richly decorated rooms, fine art collections and historic state rooms, while the surrounding gardens include themed areas like the “Collector Earl’s Garden” and well-kept grounds.
