18. Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland is a striking example of a fortress-turned-family residence whose history spans nearly a millennium. Initially founded in the late 11th century soon after the Norman Conquest, it was substantially rebuilt and extended over the following centuries.

The castle has been the home of the Percy family (later Dukes of Northumberland) since 1309, and the estate reflects both defensive and domestic ambitions.

Architectural phases include medieval strong-towers, 18th- and 19th-century remodelling, and a major Victorian reinterpretation of the medieval element.

In modern times Alnwick Castle has gained global recognition through its role as a filming location.

Notably, it portrayed the exterior and grounds of Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets films.

Today the castle remains a lived-in noble residence and a visitor attraction. Guests can explore its grand interiors, learn about its layered past, and enjoy activities within the grounds.

Its combination of fortified heritage, family continuity and pop-culture prominence gives it a distinctive character.
