3. Which famous novel features Whitby Abbey?

Answer: Dracula

The inspiration for Dracula came to its author, Bram Stoker, during a visit to the Yorkshire fishing village of Whitby in 1890. He was particularly struck by its atmospheric Abbey, its ruin overlooking the town from a nearby promontory.

In the story Count Dracula comes ashore at the village, and in the shape of a black dog runs up the 199 steps to the graveyard of St Mary’s Church in the shadow of the Whitby Abbey ruins.
