Most people associate the town of Windsor, Berkshire, with its majestic castle. However there’s much more to this pretty Thames Valley town. Here are five great things to see and do there…
ETON COLLEGE
Eton College is a prestigious boarding school located just across the River Thames from Windsor. It’s the most prestigious school in England, boasting Princes William & Harry, George Orwell, Boris Johnston the Duke of Wellington and actor Damien Lewis amongst its many famous alumni.
The school was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI and has taught boys from the aristocratic families of England and abroad since then.
It’s also a lovely place to visit – just a short walk down and over the river from the castle. Regular tours for tourists are held by the school authorities including of the many excellent Eton College Collections.
During term time you’ll also spot pupils wearing the very traditional school uniform of a black tailcoat, or morning coat, worn over a black waistcoat and pinstriped trousers. There is also worn a distinctive white neck tie. The school has only recently bowed a little to the modern world, only requiring top hats to be worn on special occasions…
THE LONG WALK & GREAT PARK

The Long Walk is a stunning, straight, tree-lined avenue that stretches for 2.64 miles from the Castle’s Cambridge Gate to the foot of the statue of King George III, also known as The Copper Horse.
A popular spot for leisurely strolls and admiring incredible views of Windsor Castle, the Long Walk offers a picturesque escape from urban life.
Apart from enjoying the exceptional views of the castle, visitors can also enjoy the variety of trees and plants that adorn the pathway.
Deer can often be seen roaming in the park, adding to the charming atmosphere of the area.
While exploring the Long Walk, make sure to venture through Windsor Great Park, a vast open space filled with ancient woodlands, manicured gardens, and sculptures.
It is perfect for family picnics, cycling, and even horse riding.
The Great Park is what remains of Henry VIII’s hunting grounds. It’s now a lovely place to stroll through the ancient trees, look out for deer and have a picnic.

FROGMORE HOUSE AND GARDENS

Located just a short distance from Windsor Castle, Frogmore House (not to be confiused with Frogmore Cottage, recent home to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex) has been a residence for the British royal family since 1792. Built in 1680 by architect Hugh May, the house and gardens offer a tranquil retreat that have been appreciated by royals for over three centuries.
Frogmore House is open to the public during three summer Charity Open Days, with all proceeds donated to specially selected charities,. The gorgeous gardens, however, stand in the Home Park of Windsor Castle and can be enjoyed by visitors throughout the year, according to the Royal Collection.
Stroll through the gardens and explore the serene setting and discover its diverse flora, plants, and trees, as well as its historical relevance.
Visit the Royal Mausoleum and pay your respects at the final resting place of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
RIVER THAMES BOAT TOUR

One of the most enjoyable ways to explore Windsor is by taking a river boat tour. The picturesque Thames River flows through the heart of Windsor, offering an entirely unique perspective of the town and its surroundings.
